Before the Norman Conquest, Alton belonged to Edward the Confessor's Queen, Edith. William I granted
the parish to the Abbott of New Minster (Hyde Abbey) c1070 and this was confirmed by Henry I in 1116. Alton was not
ordained as a vicarage until 1312 - Thomas Ladde had already been appointed vicar - and it is only from then that we
have a continuous list of "perpetual vicars". One date is given for each, usually the date of appointment (it is not
always known when they left or how long an interregnum might have been). Since most of the early records of Hyde Abbey
have been lost, we have very few names connected with the Parish before 1310 and they were generally Rectors, not
resident in Alton.
